Two Weeks in Forest Soil Strengthens Your Child's Immune System

Finnish scientists discovered that playing in forest soil measurably strengthens children's immune systems in just 28 days. At our camps in Phuket, children spend hours a day with their hands in living soil — here's the science behind why that matters.

Forest Soil Builds Immunity Faster Than You Think

Finnish scientists discovered something extraordinary: playing in forest soil measurably strengthens children's immune systems — in just 28 days.

The results weren't subtle. They were visible in blood tests.

At our camps, children spend hours every day gardening, caring for animals, and playing in exactly this kind of living soil.

The 28-Day Forest Floor Study

University of Helsinki researchers brought forest floor material into urban daycare yards. Children played on it daily for one month (Roslund et al., Science Advances, 2020).

After 28 days, tests showed:

  • Gut and skin bacteria diversity: significantly increased
  • Immune-regulating T cells: higher
  • Inflammatory markers: reduced

The "germs" in forest soil weren't making children sick. They were training their immune systems to function properly. Researchers call this the biodiversity hypothesis: children's immune systems need contact with the rich microbial life of natural soil to learn the difference between real threats and harmless visitors.

Phuket Has Advantages Finland Doesn't

The Finnish children got 90 minutes of soil contact daily. At our camps, children are outdoors most of the day, with advantages a Nordic climate can't offer:

  • Year-round outdoor access — no winter break in immune training
  • Tropical soil — among the most biologically rich environments on Earth
  • Natural vitamin D — daily sunshine instead of supplements
  • A 5,600 sqm palm plantation campus — gardens, animals, and shaded play areas under the palm canopy

Where Children Meet the Soil at Camp

Daily life at camp is built around exactly the kind of contact the research describes:

Gardening — digging, planting, watering, and harvesting in the camp garden, hands in soil every day.

Animal care — feeding and looking after our rabbits, goats, and chickens. Animal contact is part of the same microbial picture: children who grow up around animals tend to have lower rates of allergies and asthma.

Outdoor free play — mud kitchen, water play, building with sticks and natural materials under the palms.

Our Camps

Mini Camp (ages 3–6) — 13,000฿/week Gardening, animal care, baking, Waldorf painting, yoga, stories and circle time.

Maxi Camp (ages 7–13) — 15,000฿/week Animal care, gardening, Muay Thai, cooking and baking, sports and games — plus a field trip every Tuesday and beach day every Thursday.

Camp days run 8:45am to 3:00pm, with lunch and snacks included. We run camps during the main school holidays — summer, October, and Christmas. Summer Camp 2026 runs June 29 – August 14 with seven weekly sessions; book any single week or several.

Common Questions

"What about tropical diseases?" The beneficial soil bacteria in the research are the same families found in healthy soil everywhere, including Thailand. We maintain clean facilities, and handwashing before meals is part of the daily rhythm.

"My child has allergies — is this safe?" The research suggests microbial exposure particularly benefits children with inflammatory conditions. That said, always consult your pediatrician about your child's specific situation.

"Will it be too hot?" The most active outdoor time happens in the cooler morning hours, and the palm canopy provides natural shade throughout the day. Water breaks are built into the rhythm.

Give Their Immune System What It's Asking For

The science is clear: children's immune systems develop through contact with the natural world, and that development window is now.
